A diesel turbocharger is made up of a series of individual parts and components, but turbo parts can break down and fail over time due to corrosion, excess pressure and heat. The turbo is designed to increase the flow of exhaust gas to the engine to generate additional power. The amount of exhaust gas flowing to the engine must be monitored to ensure the vehicle doesn’t consume more fuel than necessary.
Turbo Hoses
The hoses on the turbocharger are designed to transport the exhaust gas to the engine. They are typically made with flexible silicone or rubber that will dampen the vibrations of the compressed gas. These hoses will need to be replaced as they age and the hose material loses its flexible properties. The hose will stiffen and begin to crack, causing leaks in the turbocharger.
Turbo Vane Position Solenoids
Turbo vane position solenoids are used to calculate the position of variable geometry turbos (VGTs). The position of the sliding vanes of the turbo will change based on the amount of exhaust gas needed to give the engine a boost. The solenoid will relay the position of the turbo to the engine control module (ECM), which then tells the turbo which position the vanes should be in based on engine conditions. If the solenoid is faulty, the ECM won’t be able to adjust the position of the vane, which could cause the turbo to fail. Keeping the turbo in a fixed position exposes the turbocharger parts to additional heat and pressure.
