The turbocharger on a diesel engine is designed to increase the volume and density of air flowing into the combustion chamber, which increases how much power the engine is able to produce. The turbocharger assembly consists of the turbine and compressor. 

A turbocharger assembly consists of the turbine and the compressor wheel. These two components straddle opposite ends of the combustion process.. The turbine sits on the exhaust (hot) side and the compressor is on the clean air (cold) side connected together by a central shaft. Essentially, a turbocharger uses the hot exhaust gasses from the engine to compress incoming air on the cold side with the compressor wheel. The exhaust gasses drive the turbine which then drives the compressor wheel via the connecting shaft.

The compressed air then moves into the combustion chamber where the increase in air density allows the engine to optimize fuel burn, increasing both power and efficiency. 

Turbochargers for diesels have either a fixed or variable geometry. Variable geometry turbos (VGTs) come with sliding sleeves that automatically adjust the flow of compressed air based on the required horsepower output. Fixed geometry turbos have set dimensions and can only force so much air into the combustion chamber at a time. VGTs improve fuel efficiency and reduce turbo lag, or the time from when you engage the turbo to when the engine produces additional power. They are also known to produce better torque response at lower RPMs to help you tow heavy loads or accelerate up a steep incline.
