EGR Cooler & Valve

Diesel engines use exhaust gas recirculation (EGR) to reduce NOx emissions and overheating. The EGR cooler lowers the temperature of the exhaust gas being recycled through the engine before it re-enters the combustion chamber by transferring heat to the coolant system, which releases it through the radiator. Cooling the exhaust gas mixture prevents damage to the cylinder head and helps the engine ignite fuel at the ideal temperature.

When the exhaust gas overheats, it will damage the engine and cause the vehicle to consume more fuel than necessary. The heat transfer system can also leak coolant into the exhaust, releasing white smoke out of the tailpipe. A faulty EGR cooler will burn more coolant than usual, which leads to more wear and tear across multiple systems.

Replace your truck’s EGR diesel cooler when fuel efficiency drops, emissions increase, coolant levels decrease or smoke comes out of the exhaust. The cooler on 6.7L and 7.3L Powerstroke engines can easily overheat, clog the air intake manifold with carbon and break down due to excess towing. Depending on the make/model, most EGR coolers should be replaced every 80,000 miles. 

This technology was introduced in the 1970s and became mandatory for all diesel engines in 2002. Without a working EGR cooler, your vehicle could fail inspection and spread harmful pollutants throughout the workplace. Driving with a faulty EGR will also limit the lifespan of the engine, leading to more repairs.
