The excess gas is then released to reduce boost pressure. Heat and pressure can damage the spring over time, and the actuator will open sooner than necessary, slowing the turbo. The diaphragm may also fail to open due to corrosion. 

If the actuator fails, the turbocharger will likely spin too fast, creating additional pressure which can damage the engine. Individual components on the turbo may also become damaged under excess pressure, including the sleeves and the sliding vane that releases the excess gas.
