What is an HPOP?
The high pressure oil pump (HPOP) in a diesel engine is designed to send oil to the various parts and components that power the engine. The oil lubricates the engine to keep these parts moving even when operating under high pressure volumes. The HPOP controls the flow of oil as it moves throughout the engine. It uses a pressure relief valve to control the amount of oil pressure in the system. The size of the pump should match the amount of oil needed to keep the engine running.
HPOPs send out oil at a set flow rate based on the rotations per minute (RPM). Heavy-duty diesel engines and racing vehicles tend to need larger high pressure oil pumps because they operate at a higher RPM.
If the oil pressure is low in your engine, your parts will start to wear down faster than they would normally. The HPOP can control the flow of oil, but the oil may face resistance as it travels through the oil system. Increased bore clearances that come with age can decrease oil pressure. The greater the clearances, the greater the need for oil. Other obstacles can increase oil pressure while decreasing the overall flow. Certain parts of the engine will cease to operate entirely if they don’t have enough oil.
