Diesel engines use complex cooling systems to reduce the temperature of the exhaust gas to prevent the spread of harmful emissions. The coolant is used as part of the vehicle’s exhaust gas recirculation (EGR) system. Once the diesel exhaust gas has been burned, it travels through the EGR cooler, which transfers heat from the gas to the coolant. The coolant process relies on a network of diesel coolant system components that ensure the coolant successfully lowers the temperature of the exhaust gas to prevent the engine from overheating.

Coolant Temperature Sensor
The coolant temperature sensor measures the temperature of the coolant in the exhaust system. It signifies the overall temperature of the engine. This information is then sent to the engine control unit, which will adjust fuel injection and timing to lower the temperature of the engine. If the coolant temperature sensor fails, the engine will burn more fuel than necessary and the engine may become overheated.
Coolant Filtration System
The coolant filtration system is designed to remove debris and other contaminants from the coolant to prevent clogs and build-up. The debris also makes the coolant less efficient, which will increase the temperature of the engine. It will also filter out excess water to prevent corrosion in the coolant system.
