The diesel fuel injection pressure regulator (IPR) valve in a diesel engine controls the pressure of the oil that is pumped throughout the engine, mainly to the diesel fuel injectors, which supply fuel to the combustion chamber. The IPR valve sits on the high-pressure oil pump and is part of the hydraulically activated, electronically controlled, unit injector (HEUI) fuel system.
What is an IPR Valve?
The IPR valve controls the pressure volume of the oil moving through the HEUI system. Oil lubricates the diesel fuel injectors that power the engine. The entire injection process is overseen by the engine control module (ECM), which collects data on engine performance from various sensors throughout the engine.
The IPR valve essentially converts the electronic signal it receives from the ECM into a mechanical process. Once the signal to fire has been received, the high-pressure oil pump builds oil pressure using volume. The IPR valve then controls the amount of oil flowing out of the pump based on how much pressure is needed to fire the injectors, usually 450 psi to 3,000 psi.
The IPR valve can become sticky and damaged after a while, especially after excessive hauling and driving at higher RPMs. Replacing the valve ensures that your engine has enough oil to fire the fuel injectors. The valve should be able to produce consistent pressure on demand to keep the engine running at the required RPM, or you may damage your fuel injectors or lose power suddenly while driving.
