The EGR cooler in a diesel engine is part of the vehicle’s exhaust gas recirculation system that reduces the amount of NOx emissions coming from the exhaust. The EGR cooler is designed to lower the temperature of the exhaust gas as it circulates throughout the engine to prevent these toxins from being released into the atmosphere. Maintaining the EGR system improves engine performance. Certain types of diesel engines must also use this technology to comply with the latest regulations from the Environmental Protection Agency.
What is an EGR Cooler?
Instead of emitting the exhaust gas, it gets recycled throughout the fuel system. The EGR cooler reduces the temperature of the exhaust gas before it goes back into the combustion chamber, which prevents NOx from forming during the combustion process.
EGR coolers work by bringing coolant near the exhaust gas. Heat is then transferred from the exhaust gas to the coolant. The coolant is then sent back to the radiator where the extra heat is burned off through the atmosphere.
Reducing the temperature of the exhaust gas also reduces wear and tear on the engine. If the exhaust gas gets too hot, it can damage the parts and components it encounters. Certain types of coolers are known to be faulty. Others may need to be cleaned or maintained over time to improve the flow of coolant. If the cooler breaks down entirely, coolant can leak into the crankcase, causing white or blue smoke to come out of the tailpipe.
