A fuel pump sensor detects the amount of fuel in the tank. It calculates the estimated amount based on the height of the fluid line and relays the findings to other parts of the engine. If fuel levels are low, the sensor highlights the fuel symbol on the dash to remind you to refuel.

Ultrasonic and radar sensors bounce sounds or electromagnetic waves off the fuel and then record the amount of time it takes for the wave or sound to return. Mechanical sensors sit at the bottom of the fuel tank to measure the amount of air pressure acting on the fuel. The fuel pump sensor also monitors the tank for evaporative and mechanical leaks. It will highlight the check engine light if the tank is losing more fuel than usual.

Mechanical wear and tear, increased vibrations, extreme temperature changes and wiring issues can cause the sensor to malfunction, increasing your chances of running out of fuel. The engine could burn more fuel than usual, suddenly lose power or overheat due to a lack of fuel. The sensor could last the lifespan of the engine. Others may need to be replaced or serviced every 100,000 miles. Driving off-road or in extreme weather can damage the sensor over time. Compare the amount of fuel in the tank to the readings on the sensor. You can also use a multimeter to check if it has power.

Shop for a replacement fuel pump sensor and all other necessary diesel products by make/model or engine type to monitor your fuel usage.
