A diesel water pump distributes coolant throughout the engine to prevent overheating. It uses pressure to push coolant through various passageways, transferring heat from the engine block and cylinder heads to the radiator.
A mechanical water pump draws coolant out through an impeller inside a metal housing. The process is controlled by a belt timed to the cam or crank. An electrical water pump is controlled by the engine control unit, which times coolant flow and quantity based on the temperature of the exhaust. The coolant lowers the temperature of the cylinder heads after they release highly pressurized fuel into the combustion chamber. It also cools the exhaust gas being recycled through the engine via the exhaust gas recirculation cooler (EGR).
Most water pumps need to be replaced every 50,000 to 100,000 miles, but a well-maintained system can last up to a million miles or more. Excessive towing, driving in hot weather and not changing the oil and coolant can overwhelm the system. To prevent damage, drain and replace the coolant every two years. The automotive water pump can collect debris, limiting the flow of coolant. Clogs reduce circulation, which makes it harder for the fluid to cool. If the coolant surpasses 110°C (230°F), the engine will overheat. Check the coolant levels often. If the fluid appears cloudy after changing it out, the pump should be replaced. A faulty diesel water pump will decrease fuel efficiency, increase wear and tear and reduce engine power.
