Diesel fuel injectors are tasked with delivering the fuel to the combustion cylinders. All diesel engines use direct injection, which means the injectors deliver the fuel directly into the cylinders. The injectors need to be able to withstand the excess heat and pressure inside the cylinder, while still delivering the fuel as a fine mist. The mist also needs to circulate throughout the cylinder or it won’t burn all the way through. 

The diesel injectors are controlled by the Injection Driver Module (IDM) or Fuel Injection Control Module (FICM), which sets the timing of the injection process. The IDM or FICM sends an electrical signal to the injectors based on how much fuel is needed to power the engine using the information it receives from various control sensors in the engine. 

The injectors operate at the same rotation per minute (RPM) as the engine, usually ranging from 2,000 to 2,500 RPM. The entire injection process occurs in less than 1.5 milliseconds. During the injection cycle, the IDM grounds the injector, thus completing the electric circuit. This causes the injector nozzle to open, which releases the fuel directly into the cylinder. The IDM will then break the circuit to close the nozzle before repeating the diesel fuel injection process. The length of time the injector stays open depends on required horsepower output from the engine.

The fuel inside the diesel fuel injection system also works as a lubricant, which protects the various parts and components from breaking down. Fuel injectors can fail for a number of reasons.
