Every diesel engine is made up of a complex network of parts and components that help deliver fuel to the combustion chamber where it is burned and converted into mechanical energy. Most diesel engines use direct fuel injection, which means the fuel injectors spray the fuel directly into the combustion chamber. The diesel fuel must be pressurized before entering the chamber where it will mix with highly compressed exhaust gas. The diesel fuel injectors require a steady stream of oil, which acts as a lubricant, to pressurize the fuel. The injectors then spray the fuel in a neat, all-over pattern to ensure it burns quickly and efficiently. 

The injectors must fire at the right time and deliver fuel at the correct pressure to keep the engine running. The exact pressure of the oil used in the fuel system is monitored by the injection control pressure sensor, which relays its findings to the powertrain control module (PCM). The PCM controls the amount of oil going to the injectors so the fuel can fire at the correct pressure. 

Due to the immense pressure, it is not uncommon for diesel fuel parts to break down over time. The oil will get recirculated throughout the fuel injectors. Carbon, soot and other particulate matter can clog the injectors and fuel lines if it’s been a while since you’ve changed your oil. If the injectors won’t fire, the engine won’t receive enough fuel to generate power. You may also experience poor fuel efficiency, frequent stalling, rough idling and other issues when driving with a faulty fuel injector.
