NOx Sensor
The NOx sensor measures the amount of nitrous oxide coming out of the exhaust. It is part of the vehicle’s NOx reduction aftertreatment system as a way of reducing the spread of hazardous emissions. They are used in diesel vehicles with urea-based selective catalytic reduction (SCR) systems that reduce the amount of NOx coming out of the tailpipe. The engine uses this information to calculate the amount of urea needed to limit emissions. If the NOx sensor fails, the SCR system cannot function properly.
Exhaust Back Pressure Sensors
The EBP sensor measures the amount of back pressure of the exhaust at various points in the Diesel Particulate Filter (DPF) regeneration process. The DPF filter is designed to capture soot and particulate matter from the exhaust to prevent it from polluting the environment. The exhaust back pressure sensor measures how much the pressure has changed after the exhaust has passed through the filter. If the pressure has not changed, the filter may be clogged, which sets off the regeneration process.
Exhaust Gas Temperature Sensor
The EGT sensor measures the temperature of the exhaust gas throughout the DPF regeneration process. The engine control module used the temperature reading to determine the correct temperature for regeneration to prevent particulate matter from escaping through the exhaust. There are typically three EGT sensors in a diesel engine, including one after the turbocharger, one before the DPF and one after the particulate filter.
Manifold Pressure Sensor
The MAP sensor measures exhaust air density and the engine’s air mass flow rate. The ECU uses this information to calculate the amount of fuel necessary for combustion. It improves efficiency and fuel consumption by creating the optimal conditions for the fuel to burn.
